It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Matt Hassett, a true legend of Toomevara GAA and Tipperary hurling. His lifelong dedication to the game, both on and off the field, left an indelible mark on our club, our county, and the wider GAA community.
Matt’s passing marks the end of over 75 years of dedicated service to the GAA, particularly to his beloved Toomevara GAA club.
From an early age, Matt developed a deep love for hurling. After winning a North Intermediate medal in 1955, he went on to claim four North Senior Championships between 1958 and 1962. He was also a key figure in Toomevara’s historic County Final victory over Thurles Sarsfields in 1960.
In 1961, Matt had the tremendous honor of captaining Tipperary to All-Ireland victory. That same year, he also lifted the National League trophy and the Oireachtas Cup, further cementing his place in GAA history.
A talented footballer as well, Matt won three County Senior Football medals between 1958 and 1961.
Beyond his playing career, Matt made significant contributions as an administrator. In the early 1950s, he was appointed club secretary, later serving as secretary of the North Tipperary Board from 1964 to 1968 and became Chairman of Toomevara in 1976.
He went on to become treasurer of the County Board and, until his passing, held the esteemed position of President of the County Tipperary Board, the North Tipperary Board, and Toomevara GAA Club.
Throughout his life, Matt was admired not only for his skill and leadership but also for his unwavering sportsmanship, quick wit, and great sense of humor. Above all, his humility endeared him to many. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
On behalf of everyone at Toomevara GAA, we extend our deepest sympathies to Matt’s family, friends, and all who mourn his passing. His contributions to our club and to the wider GAA community will never be forgotten. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
